Zatara

Regional merchandise: textiles, luxury goods, jewelry, herbs, hides

This expansive land stretches between the Fiery Mountains and the midland range. Within its evergreen jungle reside creatures and plants that have thrived here since ancient times, some of which have never been witnessed by human eyes. The lush, dense foliage and the relentless presence of troublesome, disease-carrying insects render these territories uncharted, concealing forgotten treasures from past civilizations and the remnants of previous explorers.

In the northwest corner of this land stands the city of Xaluna, often referred to as the “City on the River”. All river shipments must pass through this strategic hub. Nestled within the river’s estuary lies Yatumaukari, the primary port of this region. The Grand Jewel, known as the city of Vanazir, serves as the capital among these loosely affiliated cities. Here, the towering crystal structures reach above the forest canopy.

Ratana, positioned at the edge of the Zatara jungle, acts as the gateway to this land. Local grapevines flourish across the entire region, supplying its inhabitants with refreshing wine. Hunting, while challenging in these parts, remains a popular means of sustenance for the poor and a sport for the wealthy.

About half of the population of sentient beings residing here are Virdis, with the majority of the remaining inhabitants being Beastly. Due to the humid nature of the jungle and the constant decay of plant life, this region feels like home to plant folks. Virdis are known for their welcoming nature and good relations with other races, as they generally despise conflicts. As such, sentient creatures of all races who arrive in the cities are warmly received and swiftly integrated into society.

Their culture revolves around the principle of respecting all life forms, believing that every living being deserves to be treated well. However, differences arise with their neighbors, particularly those from the Land of Nur. They maintain favorable relations with Kambala and hold folks from Verdalia in high esteem. Regions less hospitable to the Virdis often become occupied by people with whom they don’t share compatibility. Morozia, Burgos, and Worgos are regions generally viewed as such by the folk of Zatara.

Virdis have established their own neighborhoods, and many of them who have rooted can be found in the city, creating small forests nurtured by younger generations. Also outside the city, within the nearby jungle, many elderly Virdis stand in patches during their endless rest, providing knowledge for those who can communicate with them.

The Beastly residing in the Zatara jungle are primarily of regional origin, including monkeys, sloths, tigers, snakes, and various other species. They navigate the jungle with relative ease but often choose to live in the cities, with only a few tribes rejecting civilization while still engaging in trade. Unlike Humans, they are well adapted to the humidity and temperatures of this region, where most people would find living in the jungle challenging.

The inhabitants here are primarily engaged in business as merchants and travelers, with some arriving to explore the jungle and its hidden treasures. The only exceptions are Human mages of elemental affiliation who band together somewhere in the jungle along the road from Xaluna to Vanazir. These bandits are led by Magnus Zephir, an ice mage who sustains a prosperous life through theft and general chaos he spreads. The region’s humidity and the lack of resources, such as metals and hex components, are the main reasons why Artifex tend to avoid this part of the continent. While they may be seen in convoys, they always depart as quickly as they arrive.
