River Suran
The primary source of this river starts in Karu City and, not long after, swells to a width of almost 50 meters. Native forest-dwelling tribes have developed their methods for navigating this enormous obstacle, but travelers on the established routes must rely on ferries. During the rainy season, there are days and even weeks when the river’s current becomes too powerful to cross safely. The animals residing along the riverbanks have evolved to cope with this mighty flow, as exemplified by salmon’s annual migration upriver in October. During this season, bears hunt the salmon, making water travel dangerous. A curious fact is that the physiological characteristics of these animals don’t typically suggest the ability to swim against such strong currents, leading to theories that the creatures in this region use some form of magic to traverse the waters.
