Jogunhol
Often regarded as the northern trade hub of Astoria, Jogunhol stands sentinel at the entrance to the Fool’s Gambit. This geographical position compelled the city’s architects to erect an imposing and steadfast wall, separating the passage from the main streets. The tower gate at this entrance is continuously manned, ensuring a vigilant watch. During the night, entry into the city from the north is strictly prohibited, often compelling travelers to sleep near the entrance. The persistent threat posed by the northern passage has led to an abundance of fencing schools and barracks in the northern district, with the Convent of Derzen being the largest. This part of the city can be perilous at night, with many thieves and thugs roaming the streets.
A significant portion of Jogunhol’s population consists of miners who delve into the surrounding mountains. There are approximately twelve active mines on the northern side of Lake Astoria. Miners often embark on week-long expeditions to work in these mines and while accidents can occur, the potential rewards make the risk worthwhile.
Situated conveniently in the southern part of town, the commercial district offers a wealth of inaccessible and exotic goods from the north. Many merchants flock here to purchase imported northern goods at the most competitive prices, which they later transport south to sell at a profit. Closer to the port, numerous small boats are suspended high from the walls, accompanied by paddles or long poles.
Jogunhol is positioned along the lakeshore, and the fluctuating water levels caused by snow melts and rain, result in a significant portion of the town becoming submerged at regular intervals. During the spring, when water levels peak, many residents opt to use boats instead of walking as most homes lose access to the solid ground. Consequently, the city boasts its distinctive appearance, characterized by elevated buildings and tall stairways leading to doorsteps.
