General Idea

Haze is an TTRPG passion project born from love for the tale and classic fantasy. We aim to create a simple, strongly collaborative D10 game system with elastic progression and focus on narration. A perfect game of Haze should be light on rules and filled with memorable moments of your hero’s journey. 

While many of the world’s elements take root in mythology, science and ethnology they all are adapted to the reality of the Haze world. Additionally where in other games the topic of magic is explored and has been exhausted, the conversations regarding religion often lag behind. Faith in Haze is a fundamental attribute and strong emphasis is placed on its workings and application. With the extensive and tightly woven world, Haze aims to create something new while keeping the atmosphere of wonder and mystery.

– Races –

Human

The human race, much like us, look very similar to each other, with differences mostly in the color of their skin and some superficial elements. Additionally humans vary from place to place with their clothes reflecting local climate and culture. They are the most widespread race in the world of Haze, thanks to their adaptability and universal endurance. Though usually friendly towards other races they generally befriend Beastly folk, as they have the most in common with each other.

Beastly

The Beastly race is a unique blend between humans and animals. They range from animals with human intellect to humans with animalistic body parts. Their minds lean towards a more primal and instinctual nature, making them more in tune with their beastly side. They often hold strong religious beliefs and cherish traditions of their tribal society. Many come from the Wild Lands but they can be found anywhere around the world where animals live.

Virdis

Virdis are plant folk composed of living growth. Many live in the Nasara Forest or reside in Verdalia as it is their homeland. They strongly vary in appearance based on the plant they grew out from. Differently from common plants they possess the ability to move, defying the traditional earthbound limitations. Virdis exhibits a symbiotic relationship with nature and they have a natural talent for the arcane. Much like plants they harness the nutrition from the soil making their lives quite difficult in places devoid of dirt.

Artifex

Artifex are ancient humanoid machines that gained consciousness through unknown events. They are a fusion of bygone technology and arcane energy, possessing intricate mechanical bodies with hex elements. These beings have the ability to think, reason, and with time develop personalities, making them a real curiosity within the world of Haze. Unique circumstances of their birth make them somewhat rare as most automatons break before they gain consciousness.

– The world –

Mist

The world of Haze is characterised by the presence of the magical fog or mist. This phenomenon, much like a coin, has two sides. On one hand mist is filled with glimmer – an opalising dust that reinvigorates the ground and provides nutrients for creatures and plants. It is used by folk in many ways; as a spice, stimulant or medication. Energy of the mist can be harnessed to power machines or charge crystals. On the other hand, every cloud of mist is filled with ever-hungry monsters called mistborn, that much like the fish in the ocean, swim in the magical fog. The very same glimmer collected by folk makes mistborns, enraged and violent, perpetuating their endless hunt. If such a cloud ever passes through any settlement, folk bolt their windows and prepare for the inevitable.To make matters worse, mist, similarly to strong magic, impacts the physical properties of materials making many machines inoperable. Metals soften, ropes stiffen, gunpowder becomes inflammable and crystals start to work in unpredictable ways. There are materials that don’t change but those are rare and expensive, leaving little options for defence. Magic in the mist becomes wild and unpredictable, often causing more harm than good, and only divine miracles done by the clergy provide some assurance, although even they feel somewhat twisted.

Settlements and travel

The world of Haze is filled with many great cities that strongly reflect the climate and culture of the region and its inhabitants. They are separated from each other by great distance which further strengthens their identity. Many of them are located in places that rarely ever experience mists, making living outside of them a choice that only few make willingly. Road houses resemble small fortresses. Beside them and some odd villages, only wild tribes live outside of the main settlements. If folk travel they usually use motorised wagons that not only provide protection but are also generally manned with hired mercenaries for additional safety. Most of the land travels involve some kind of trade, either in materials, goods or knowledge from distant countries. If folks travel they usually have a very good reason for that.

Ruins

The landscape of the world is filled with ancient ruins that still hold their long forgotten treasures. Some stand proudly in remote locations visible from the great cities but many remain hidden only to be rediscovered in some old book or by pure accident. A number of settlements were built atop the ruins with the intention to gain what remained below and many of them still have valuables inside. While the promise of unimaginable wealth looms over every ruin, treasure hunters know that they are equally as tempting as dangerous. No one knows how those bygone civilisations have fallen and the price for that answer is often greater than many are willing to pay. “Curiosity killed the cat” as they say…
