A new adventure

Welcome to Haze: The Crystal Mist Adventure, where magic and technology collide amidst the endless dangers of the mist-bound world. This project began in early 2022, and after many months of relentless work, We are pleased to present to you the fruits of our labor. Haze represents the culmination of over 10 years of experience as a game master and an attempt to address certain issues We’ve encountered in other well-known RPGs. It’s important to note that this entire game has, for the most part, been created by a single person, so please keep that in mind. It may not be perfect, but I did my best to make it as good as possible.

I wrote this game with three main ideas in mind: simple mechanics, an original world, and the use of only one die for gameplay. Players need only a D10, as it is used in all rolls. Occasionally, they might need to divide their die or roll it mulitple times, but one die is all players need. The rules are straightforward and don’t involve calculations beyond the basic range of 50. In most rolls, players add their Skill and Attribute to a D10 roll, and that’s it. Spells and Miracles are equally easy to understand with simple formulas.

Lastly, let’s discuss the world. While I appreciate the enduring legacy of J. R. R. Tolkien, which has left its mark on the world of fantasy through iconic races like elves and dwarves, I felt it was time to create something new. Haze is my attempt to craft an original world with its own unique fauna, flora, races, places and cultures. I drew inspiration from old tales, timeless symbolism, myths, ethnology and many more and I hope that you will enjoy my work.

What are RPG games

Role-playing games (RPGs) are collective narrative games where everyone involved assumes the role of a character. One person takes on the role of a Game Master, also known as a GM. They serve as the eyes and ears of the players, describing the world in which the characters exist and determining the outcomes of players’ actions. To provide a simple explanation of what RPGs entail, consider the following:

When reading a book, you might have wondered what would have happened if the protagonist had made different choices. What if Sam had to take the ring instead of Frodo? What if Edmund hadn’t been tempted by the White Witch? What if Jaime hadn’t lost his hand? What if they went left instead of right? Unfortunately, in books, there is only one answer to such questions. But what if you were in control? Let’s imagine it. In role-playing games (RPGs), you have the opportunity to embark on adventures as the main character of the story. You make the significant decisions that drive the narrative forward. “I would have done it differently!” you may say. Well, let’s see you in action.

Now you might be wondering, how does this work? While you make decisions for your character, you don’t know whether they succeed or fail in their actions. That’s determined by a dice roll. The “Game” aspect of role-playing games consists of a set of rules that provide a level playing field. These rules clarify how actions are judged and, more importantly, what the chances of success are. They encompass character creation, character progression, and guidelines for performing checks for most common actions. Understanding these rules is crucial for smooth gameplay. While no one expects first-time players to master all the rules right away, with time, you should become familiar with them. Just as you wouldn’t play a board game without knowing the rules, the same holds true for RPGs. And similarly to board games, with time, you will get the idea just by playing.

Players and their characters

Most players take on a straightforward role. They make decisions for their characters, who are fictional individuals living in the game world, embarking on thrilling adventures filled with heroism and excitement. These characters are the central figures in the story created by the Game Masters (GMs). However, like in real life, players must bear the consequences of their actions, whether they lead to favorable or unfavorable outcomes. Whether the game involves political drama or a grand war campaign, numerous possibilities can unfold. What makes RPGs truly captivating is that, thanks to players’ decisions, events often unfold in unpredictable and unique ways lead by their actions. Players are expected to be familiar with the game’s rules and have some understanding of the world. Just as you can ride a bike intuitively after practice, understanding the game mechanics becomes second nature with experience. The GM will describe the world, but they may not explain every detail in great lenghts. In our world, electricity is self-evident and doesn’t need an explanation, just as “hex” is a common concept in the world of Haze. By reading about the world, everything should become clearer.

While players make decisions for their characters, it’s also enjoyable to role-play their dialogues. Feel free to immerse yourself in character, give them a unique voice, and make their personalities intriguing. Heroes possess distinct character traits, and so should your character. This will not only be fun for you but also for everyone else in the game. Remember that in this game of heroes, you are one as well. Try not to make it challenging for the GM to run the game. Be proactive, take action, and above all, have fun!

World of Haze

The world of Haze is filled with uncharted places and ruins full of monsters that hold the secrets of the past. Folk wield magic and faith in gods who walk amongst them. Magic has a huge impact on everyone’s lives, as it allows to heal wounds, fight of enemies or erect structures much faster than traditional means. Priests with the power of their faith, can perform amazing miracles, tangable and undeniable.

Many live in the city-states that can be found all over the continent. These habitats are loosely connected by the roads, and they form distinct regions with their own cultures and economies often based on the local materials. Some are filled with mechanical wonders powered by steam or springs while others have crystals that light the streets and power the magical devices called hex. Never both, as they interfere with each other. Towns have to be well fortified because of one thing — the mist.

This ever-present magical phenomenon happens regularly and threatens everyone’s life. Breathing it causes no harm, but in it, like in water, creatures swim. Those carnivorous beings, called “mistborn”, are numerous and dangerous. Filled with inexhaustable hanger they attack anything alive. After the mist passes animals are dead and houses destroyed, as some of those creatures are as large as the buildings.

The advancements of technology can do little to protect folk from the mist and its creatures. Physical properties of materials are ever so slightly changed to make most mechanisms unoperational. Only simple, primitive weapons like clubs and spears are devfinitive.There are bows and guns but mist distorts their workings. Hex artisans, who use rare materials, create magical devices that can work in the mist, but those are expensive and sometimes unreliable. Wizards, normally powerful, risk their lives when casting spells in the mist, while the devoted priests lose the connection to the divine.

Not everything that comes from the mist is bad as it also gives life. Creatures called Viridis are born in it and some automatons gain consciousness becoming sentient beings. The mists residue, called glimmer, when consumed stimulates senses and is the main food for many animals. Mist can also be used to power machines or recharge crystals.

The world changes dynamically and empires once powerful with time fade away. Often destroyed in unknown circumstances, their secrets forgotten, just waiting to be rediscovered. Because of that there are many folk who become adventurers. They grab the danger by the horns and risk their lives lured by the promises hidden in the darkness. Some succeed while many fail, but maybe you will be the lucky one who finds fortune in the forgotten past.

The world of Haze has been written with the idea of a heroic journey that spreads all over the world. The continent of Misteria that is depicted in this book offers many unique cultures and locations for GM to take players to. The main 4 races, each with its own quirks and cultures give choices that should meet players expectations. They allow for unique roleplay opportunities and personal growth of the characters as most races operate differently than humans.
